Robert Umanzo, 25, was dragged for approximately one mile by a vehicle after a crash on Saturday night. He died at the scene. A second cyclist died later at a hospital.
The collision occurred near the intersection of Kingsley Street and Tudor Avenue. Police said Valentin Alberto Rodriguez, 38, of Montclair, was driving while intoxicated. He struck a group of roughly 30 bicyclists who were participating in a Halloween ride.
Two other riders sustained injuries in the crash. Rodriguez left the vehicle and fled the area. Law enforcement located him at his home a few hours later.
The Montclair Police Department filed charges against Rodriguez. He faces felony hit-and-run, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and counts for causing injury or death. The identity of the second deceased cyclist has not been released.
Cristina Flores attended a memorial gathering at the crash site. She said the group is grieving for the families and the cycling community. “It’s still hard to believe,” Flores said. “More than anything, we feel for the family and the bike community, as well.”
Olivia Gonzales, a friend of Umanzo, described him as a good spirit who loved to dance. She said he was full of love and enjoyed the energy of those around him. A physical memorial is currently forming at the intersection where the crash happened.
