Two sheriff’s deputies from Spokane County have been wounded in a shooting in the small farming community of Spangle.
One deputy died after being transported to a hospital in critical condition. The second deputy remains on life support. Authorities confirmed that the surviving officer is not expected to recover. The sheriff’s office said his organs are being donated.
Deputies arrived at the residence on Tuesday afternoon after a neighbor reported that a woman had been shot by her brother. Officers determined the suspect held a felony warrant and suspected other people were inside the home. SWAT team members and deputies moved to breach the entry door when gunfire began.
The two deputies were struck during the exchange. They were taken to a local hospital. The officer who died had a wife and two children. Sheriff John Nowels identified both officers as younger members of the SWAT team. Their names have not been released.
Other deputies returned fire. They later found the suspect dead inside the house. Two additional victims were also discovered, one inside the residence and one in the yard. The woman who reported the shooting was hospitalized with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Authorities have not yet released the names of the suspect or the other victims.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Officials are reviewing what led to the incident at the Spangle home.
