The third Jumanji film will generate a family-friendly option for audiences on Christmas Day, a date Sony Pictures has now confirmed for Jumanji: Open World. This release slot follows a packed mid-December calendar that includes Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three.
The franchise has a long history of commercial success. Jake Kasdan, who directed the 2019 hit Jumanji: The Next Level, returns to helm the new project. His previous work on the series includes the 2017 entry, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which grossed more than $960 million worldwide. The 2019 sequel performed similarly well, keeping the property in active development for years.
A third movie became a near certainty after the 2019 film ended. That feature included a mid-credits scene where a repairman, played by Lamorne Morris, accidentally restarts the video game console at the home of Spencer Gilpin, portrayed by Alex Wolff. Production on the sequel initially paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but work picked up speed in 2024.
The new trailer reveals that the game has broken free of its digital boundary. In this installment, the chaos spills into the real world rather than staying contained within the virtual environment. The official synopsis labels the film the "hilarious final installment" of the trilogy. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan all return to their roles.
The footage also teases a connection to the 1995 original film. Additionally, a plot mystery remains unresolved from the previous entry. In 2019, Johnson suggested that the villain Jurgen the Brutal, played by Rory McCann, was actually the avatar of a different real-world player. This detail adds a layer of intrigue to the upcoming release.
