An 18-year-old resident of Hamburg, Germany, was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of driving a 14-year-old girl in Indiana to take her own life. The detention followed a tip provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to German authorities.
Prosecutors in Hamburg accuse the suspect of being the indirect perpetrator of murder and grievous bodily harm. They stated that the teen was part of an online group named Nefarious Maniac Kult, or NMK, which is connected to a global network called COM. The suspect allegedly used the Discord platform between September and October to exert influence over the Indiana girl, whom prosecutors described as psychologically fragile.
The charges allege that the suspect pressured the girl to cut herself and write the letters NMK on a wall using her own blood. He reportedly demanded video recordings of these acts. A few days later, the girl hanged herself in her bedroom. Prosecutors said the suspect subsequently sought a video recording of her death, believing it would help him gain entry to the group or raise his standing within it.
Timothy J. O'Malley, the FBI Special Agent in Charge for Indianapolis, said his office worked with the Fort Wayne Police Department to share information that helped German police advance the arrest. The Fort Wayne Homicide Unit identified the suspect as someone who contributed to the juvenile's death. O'Malley stated that anyone who targets or exploits a child should understand there is no safe haven from justice, regardless of where they live or try to hide.
The case fits into a wider trend noted by the FBI regarding nihilistic violent extremism. FBI Director Kash Patel reported a 300% increase in such cases between September 2024 and September 2025. Many of these incidents involved a group known as 764, which lacks a specific ideology but encourages members to engage in self-harm and violence. The group also urges victims to produce videos documenting acts of self-harm or child sexual abuse material.
