AI Funding: OpenAI Pursues $30 Billion Private Raise Ahead of Public Listing
The company is seeking a massive capital injection at a record-breaking valuation instead of proceeding directly to an IPO.

OpenAI is reportedly working to secure up to $30 billion in private funding at a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion, a move that would establish it as the most valuable private company ever if finalized. Sources told CNBC that the round is being led by Coatue and investors in the United Arab Emirates. This effort to secure private capital comes as the company seeks to raise a substantial war chest prior to entering public markets.
The company is pursuing this private financing route rather than moving forward with an initial public offering at this time. Terms of the agreement are still under negotiation and could ultimately change. According to the report, any funding from the UAE might be connected to an arrangement designed to secure additional computing capacity for the company from that region. OpenAI declined to comment on the matter.
This development follows a report by Bloomberg a month ago indicating that the company was working on raising $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation. The company had previously raised capital in March at a valuation of $852 billion post-money. Following that financing, the firm filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June.
If the company achieves a valuation above $1 trillion in this round, it would break records as the most valued private company ever. Such a high figure would also raise the bar for the company's forthcoming initial public offering, which is being prepared for public markets.
The potential valuation could have significant ramifications for the anticipated IPO of Anthropic, which many believe is closer to materializing. The latest reports have Anthropic seeking a $1.5 to $2 trillion valuation for its public debut, CNBC reports. Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation in May in what many believed at the time would be its last big round before an IPO. It also filed confidential paperwork in June.
