The artificial intelligence sector is bracing for a major financial event as Anthropic moves closer to going public. Analysts expect the company to list within the year, with a valuation that could reach as high as two trillion dollars. While such a figure would be historic, the financial winds are already blowing for those who backed the firm earlier. Even at the most recent private market valuation of 965 billion dollars, the stakes held by venture capitalists and early supporters have already grown into billions of dollars. Bloomberg data provides a clear look at the current worth of these key positions.

Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, made an early bet on the company during its Series A round in 2021. At that time, the startup was valued at just 461 million dollars. Today, Schmidt owns approximately one percent of the company. Based on the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly 10 billion dollars. This early entry point has allowed his investment to grow exponentially as the company scaled its operations and user base over the last few years.

Later-stage investors have also seen significant returns, though they entered the market at much higher valuations. Iconiq wrote a 6 billion dollar check to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at 183 billion dollars. That massive investment is now worth 17 billion dollars and has the potential to double again when the IPO occurs. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested over 1 billion dollar in total. Their current stake is valued at 14 billion dollars, reflecting the strong growth in the company's equity.

Other major players joined the fold more recently but still secured substantial gains. Sequoia first backed the AI lab earlier this year when the valuation stood at 380 billion dollars. Their 3 billion dollar investment granted them about one percent ownership. This means their capital has already more than doubled in value. Sound Ventures, founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested 35 million dollars in the 2023 Series C round. They subsequently added another 400 million dollars to their position. Although Kutcher left to launch a new firm this year, the original stake is now worth billions.

Spark Capital holds the only known board seat at Anthropic and made a notable early investment. They put 75 million dollars into the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at 5 billion dollars. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of 7 billion dollars. As the company prepares for its public listing, these figures highlight the depth of capital involved. The upcoming IPO will likely solidify these gains for all parties, marking a significant moment for both the founders and the financial backers who supported the firm through its rapid rise.
