Apple TV subscribers in the United States can now stream Formula 1 races with Dolby Atmos audio. The audio upgrade went live on Friday, October 23, ahead of this weekend's United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of The Americas. This marks the first time a Formula 1 race has been broadcast in this specific audio format.

Apple and Dolby Laboratories announced the partnership earlier this month. The companies stated that the new sound profile would launch with the Grand Prix weekend. The system processes audio from multiple sources simultaneously. This includes team radio chatter, pit lane noise, and engine sounds from the cars on track.

The goal is to place the viewer in the center of the race environment. Apple described the experience as combining the clarity of the commentary with the raw intensity of the engines. The company noted that the audio works alongside Dolby Vision video. This pairing aims to provide both high dynamic range visuals and immersive spatial audio.

The race schedule for the Austin event is fully underway. Practice 1 has already concluded. Practice 2 took place on Friday, October 23, at 5 p.m. ET. Practice 3 is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, at 1:30 p.m. ET. Qualifying sessions follow on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET. The main race event is set for Sunday, October 25, at 4 p.m. ET.

Apple is hosting a public viewing event for the Sunday race. The screening will take place at the Apple Domain NORTHSIDE store in Austin, Texas. This location has seen high-level corporate activity recently. On Friday, Apple CEO John Ternus and retail chief Deirdre O'Brien visited the store. They were there for the launch of the new iPhone Duo.

The company also updated its mapping services for the weekend. Apple Maps recently expanded its Detailed City Experience to include Austin. This update features a high-resolution map of the Circuit of The Americas. The map displays specific turn numbers, grandstand locations, and 3D landmarks. These details are designed to help fans navigate the venue more easily.

Access to the new audio features is available through the standard Apple TV subscription. The service costs $14.99 per month. Subscribers can also include it in the Apple One bundle. The platform streams other popular titles alongside the sports coverage. These shows include Ted Lasso, Severance, The Studio, and The Morning Show.

The rollout represents a technical shift for sports broadcasting on the platform. Previous F1 seasons relied on standard stereo audio. The switch to Dolby Atmos allows for directional sound cues. This change occurs just before the final race of the current season. Fans watching from home will hear the distinct sounds of the pit crew and the cars as they pass by.
