Tesla has begun serial production of the Optimus robot on a high-volume line inside its Fremont factory, marking the start of commercial-grade manufacturing for the humanoid unit. The company stated in its third quarter shareholder letter that these units meet the quality standards required for a real product, proving the current process is suitable for commercial use.

The production line occupies space previously reserved for the Model S and Model X. Tesla removed the old vehicle equipment in 46 days to install robot manufacturing capacity designed for one million units annually. On Wednesday’s earnings call, Elon Musk confirmed that most of the necessary equipment is already in place. The company aims to ramp output toward 20,000 robots per week as the line reaches full speed.

Musk described the production increase as a shallow initial slope on an S curve. The engineering team is currently refining the robot’s artificial intelligence, electromechanical design, and reliability. Tesla expects to complete this work by the end of 2027. At that point, the company plans to begin delivering Optimus units to outside businesses for dangerous, repetitive, and around-the-clock tasks.

The challenge for Tesla lies in training the robots without a large existing fleet to provide data. Unlike the automotive division, which relies on millions of vehicles to send driving data, the Optimus line has no comparable user base yet. Musk acknowledged this gap, noting the lack of a vast fleet to gather training information.

To solve this, Tesla is deploying an internal group called the Optimus Academy. This setup will feature between 10,000 and 20,000 robots practicing a wide range of tasks. The robots will feed the data they generate into the next version of the model. Every unit produced at Fremont will contribute to this self-improving dataset.

Hardware upgrades are also scheduled for the coming year. Tesla plans to install its AI5 chip into the Optimus units. Musk said a new video demonstrating tasks driven by AI rather than preprogrammed motions will arrive within one or two months. He criticized rival humanoid demos for relying on scripted routines that may not hold up in real-world conditions.
