Violence has erupted in the southern town of Hammoud, where a rare assault on a Christian congregation has shaken the majority Sunni Muslim kingdom. The attack occurred on Friday during a funeral service at a Greek Orthodox church in the Karak governorate, resulting in the deaths of at least seven individuals.
Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya addressed the public at a press conference to confirm the toll. He stated that 34 additional people sustained wounds in the incident. The minister identified the perpetrators as a group of extremists, signaling a significant security concern for the region.
The sequence of events, as detailed by the public security directorate, began when a vehicle pulled up near the church compound. Gunmen disembarked from the vehicle while a funeral procession was underway. They advanced on the site and opened fire without warning. A manhunt for the suspects is currently ongoing in the area.
Karak, located 110 miles south of the capital Amman, is known for its substantial Christian population. Footage broadcast by the state channel Al-Mamlaka provided a visual account of the assault. The video showed two attackers dressed in casual clothing holding pistols, while a third individual carried a long gun. The men fired from a street-level entrance before moving further into the vicinity.
An eyewitness who spoke with Al-Mamlaka described the intensity of the shooting. The witness reported that the vehicle carrying the attackers stopped nearby, and the gunfire continued without pause for approximately five minutes before the perpetrators fled. The witness estimated that between 150 and 200 people were present in and around the church at the time of the attack. Most of the victims were reported to be in the age range of 50 to 70 years old.
The timeline of how this crisis developed includes a broader context of regional instability. Minister of Government Communications Mohammed Al-Momani stated that security forces are actively investigating the incident to determine the full scope of the operation. The location itself has a history of violent events. In 2016, gunmen ambushed police in a series of attacks in the Karak area, including at a Crusader castle that attracts many tourists. That previous incident left ten people dead, seven of whom were officers, and wounded dozens of others before security forces ended a lengthy standoff.
The response from national leadership has been swift and forceful. King Abdullah II pledged the harshest retaliation against those responsible for the bloodshed. In a statement on social media, the king emphasized the value of every Jordanian life. He declared that the nation would strike with an iron fist against those who dare to threaten its stability.
International reactions have also emerged, particularly from neighboring regions. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, the only Christian head of state in the Arab world, condemned the shooting as a heinous terrorist attack. According to a statement from the presidency, Aoun noted that the incident reaffirms that terrorism has no religion or homeland. He added that the aim of such acts is to strike at coexistence and spread strife.
What happens next depends on the outcome of the ongoing manhunt and the investigation led by security forces. The discovery of the attackers and the release of further details on their identities and motivations will likely shape the immediate political and security landscape in Jordan. For now, the focus remains on the recovery of the injured and the mourning of the deceased in the community of Hammoud.
