Melania Trump's office sets 6-day halt for Oleshky
The First Lady claims the role of Exclusive Intermediary in a humanitarian pause starting Oct. 29.

The office of First Lady Melania Trump announced on Friday that a six-day ceasefire will begin in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine. The pause is scheduled to start on Thursday, Oct. 29, and is designed to allow humanitarian aid to enter the region and facilitate the evacuation of civilians.
The announcement credits Mrs. Trump with brokering the deal, a role typically held by senior executive officials. Her office stated that she acted as the "Exclusive Intermediary" throughout the negotiation process. She reportedly started talks with both nations and aligned them on technical procedures, timing, and the specific terms of the local truce.
Ukrainian officials confirmed that a tentative agreement was reached for the occupied territory, although neither Russia nor Ukraine has issued a public statement on the matter. The plan calls for non-military civilian leaders from both countries to visit residents in their homes to assess needs. Those who choose to leave will receive coordinated transportation to either Russia or Ukraine.
Mrs. Trump described the city as a front-line war zone on the brink of disaster. She noted that the remaining population consists largely of elderly residents who require urgent medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water. She said that residents face limited electricity, mined roads, and regular military attacks, making intervention necessary to bring in aid.
Newsmax, a conservative media organization, has agreed to document the work of the Russian and Ukrainian teams during the pause. White House communications director Steven Cheung called the development "amazing news" on X. He described it as a major, positive step toward peace and said history would remember the First Lady's work to help those in need.
The announcement follows a recent phone call between Pope Leo and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the pope expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Oleshky. Mrs. Trump has also worked to reunite 34 children with their families after their removal by Russia. The local truce arrives as President Trump's wider efforts to end the war have stalled. He has expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in recent days, suggesting Ukraine should have a new leader and stating that Russia has not been doing much to kill Ukrainians.
