Providence has secured the services of Lewis Uvwo, the No. 7 overall prospect in the 2027 recruiting class according to 247Sports. The five-star center announced his commitment on Wednesday during CBS Sports HQ, selecting the Friars over offers from Kentucky, Baylor, and Cal. This move positions Uvwo as the highest-ranked center in his class and represents a major strategic acquisition for a program looking to elevate its national standing.
The path to this commitment began with an official visit to Providence last month. Uvwo, who attends Prolific Prep in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, also toured Kentucky, Cal, and Baylor prior to making his decision. The Friars had previously attracted only two five-star recruits in the 247Sports era, Ricky Ledo and Kris Dunn, both of whom committed in 2012. Uvwo’s arrival places him alongside those players as one of the highest-rated commitments in school history.
Head coach Bryan Hodgson, who is beginning his first season with the Friars, cited the program’s culture and his own coaching philosophy in his pitch. Uvwo told 247Sports’ Eric Bossi that the staff treated him as a person, not just an athlete. He noted the school’s basketball history offered space for new achievements. "I believe in what he's building and the role he sees for me," Uvwo said regarding Hodgson.
Uvwo praised Hodgson’s track record as a winner and his clear vision for the program. He described the coach as someone who understands the mechanics of building a successful team. This alignment of coaching philosophy and player identity appears central to why Uvwo rejected high-profile programs like Kentucky and Baylor.
Scouting reports emphasize Uvwo’s defensive capabilities. Adam Finklestein, the Director of Scouting at 247Sports, labels him an elite defensive prospect. At 6-foot-10 and 225 pounds, Uvwo possesses a wingspan of nearly 7-foot-6. Finklestein notes his ability to change direction quickly, flip his hips, and generate secondary jumps. The report predicts he will add muscle without sacrificing his current explosiveness.
The commitment reinforces Providence’s position within the Big East and on the national stage. In recent budget rankings, the Friars fell into Tier 4, a financial bracket ranging from $12.1 million to $15 million. They share this tier with Big East rivals Georgetown, Creighton, Villanova, and Marquette, as well as major conference programs like UCLA, Ohio State, Baylor, and Alabama. Uvwo’s signing suggests the program can compete for top-tier talent within this budget range.
Uvwo plans to join the Friars for the 2027 season. His physical tools and high motor are expected to influence the team’s defensive identity immediately. The addition of a player described as bringing a rare sense of joy to the court offers a distinct cultural shift for the squad.
