The College Football Playoff selection committee releases its first rankings of the season on Tuesday night, setting the stage for a 12-team bracket that begins in December. Miami enters the week as the AP No. 1 team and the only undefeated squad with a clear path to the top seed. The Hurricanes are widely expected to hold that position, yet the panel faces immediate decisions regarding the placement of other contenders.

Utah and UCLA remain undefeated, complicating the committee's task to differentiate between the three teams without losses. AP voters currently place Georgia at No. 2 despite a loss to unranked Auburn last month. Auburn subsequently lost to Ole Miss by 30 points just last weekend. The committee must determine whether to follow the AP poll or prioritize the perfect records of the Mountain West and Big West representatives.

The Southeastern Conference presents a unique challenge for the panel. The league enters Week 10 without an undefeated team, yet ten of its members rank in the AP Top 25. Alabama lost to Tennessee, which then fell to Texas. Texas lost to both Florida and Oklahoma, though it defeated Ohio State and Ole Miss. This pattern of high-profile upsets may force the committee to reconsider the value of the SEC's added ninth conference game this season.

Ohio State drops to a bubble team status after losing to Southern California. The Buckeyes, currently AP No. 11, have suffered two losses and lost quarterback Julian Sayin. This marks the first time since 2021 that Ohio State has fallen out of the AP top 10. The committee must decide how much weight to give the team's remaining schedule and the absence of its starter.

New rules for the 12-team bracket alter the landscape for specific programs. Notre Dame, ranked fourth in the AP poll, is guaranteed a spot if it remains in the top 12 on December 6. This change prevents a scenario like last season, where the Irish were eliminated despite a high ranking. All four Power Four conference champions also receive automatic bids, while the highest-ranked Group of Six team earns a final slot regardless of its conference title status.

The playoff schedule begins on campus December 18 and 19, followed by traditional bowl games over New Year's Day. The championship game will take place in Las Vegas on January 25. ESPN, which pays approximately $1.3 billion annually for broadcast rights, airs the rankings and games. The bracket will be finalized on December 6, concluding six weeks of weekly releases.

Defending champion Indiana sits at AP No. 6 after an overtime victory over Minnesota. The Hoosiers have won three of their last four games by narrow margins, including a loss to Ohio State. Boise State and New Mexico represent the Group of Six in the AP Top 25, with the higher-ranked team securing the designated playoff spot.
