German police arrested a 33-year-old suspect on Friday night after a fire consumed the Kehlsteinhaus, the mountain retreat built for Adolf Hitler in the Bavarian Alps. The blaze, which broke out at 6,017 feet on the peak of the Obersalzberg, left the structure completely engulfed in flames.
Emergency services received the call at 9:15 p.m. local time. By the time firefighters arrived, authorities stated the building was fully on fire. No one was found inside, and no injuries were reported. Officials noted that local conditions made it difficult for fire trucks to reach the site.
Investigators identified a suspect shortly after the fire began. Prosecutors described the man as a German citizen with ties to the Berchtesgaden area, though he does not currently live there. He showed signs of mental illness and was sent to a psychiatric facility. Prosecutors are also examining whether a political motive played a role, given the site's history. Police said there are no current indications that anyone else was involved.
The Kehlsteinhaus was completed in 1938. It served as a temporary seat of government for Hitler and escaped Allied bombing during World War II, leaving it largely in its original state. In recent decades, the site has operated as a tourist destination and a restaurant. Its website describes the structure as one of the few undamaged monuments of the Hitler era, noting that it stands for the insanity of the regime.
Joachim Herrmann, the Bavarian interior minister, addressed reporters in Berchtesgaden on Friday. He declared that the Eagle's Nest will be rebuilt. Herrmann said the future design would be determined through discussions with local officials, historians, and preservationists. "We're not going to leave a ruin there," Herrmann said. "I think we will be able to find a sensible solution."
Herrmann emphasized the need to continue the work of remembrance. He stated that it is important for the site to remain a place of reflection on the past. The reconstruction process will involve multiple stakeholders to ensure the site's historical significance is preserved.
The suspect remains in custody as the criminal investigation continues. Prosecutors are reviewing the circumstances of the arrest and the suspect's mental state. The fire has drawn national attention to the site, which had become a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
