Bayern Munich enters Sunday's Bundesliga match at Freiburg with a one-point lead in the standings and without its head coach. Vincent Kompany remains hospitalized with a viral illness, and the club expects him to be absent for several weeks. The team’s position at the top of the table depends on the outcome of this specific fixture.

Director of Sport Max Eberl confirmed on Saturday that Kompany is in stable condition. He stated that medical examinations are still ongoing to determine the exact nature of the illness. Eberl emphasized that no specific recovery timeline has been set. The club will measure the absence in weeks rather than days, prioritizing a clear diagnosis before discussing return dates.

Aaron Danks, the assistant coach from England, will take charge of the match. Danks led the press conference in Kompany’s place and noted that he spoke with the 40-year-old coach on Friday. Their conversation focused on health rather than tactics. Danks said, “I explained to him that we wouldn’t be having no football conversations. It was just checking in on his health and making sure he’s OK.” He added that the staff will work together to keep the club moving forward.

Kompany returned to the dugout for Wednesday's home game against Arsenal despite missing the pre-match briefing. He acknowledged afterward that he had ignored early warning signs of the virus. Kompany said, “I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course, I didn’t listen to my body, and then at some point, my body just said, ‘Enough is enough!’” The collapse on the training pitch occurred the day before the club's announcement.

The club decided not to request a postponement of the Freiburg match. Eberl argued that a strong performance and a positive result would be the best way to support Kompany’s recovery. He stated, “That would probably be one of the best things we could do to help him recover.” Bayern’s second team game on Friday was postponed following the incident.

Germany captain Joshua Kimmich will also miss the match after returning from bereavement leave. The team faces its next Champions League fixture on November 3 in Madrid against Atletico Madrid. For now, the immediate focus is on maintaining the league lead while the coaching staff manages the absence of their leader.

The situation places pressure on the squad to perform without its primary strategist. Danks and the remaining staff have taken over all football operations. The result in Freiburg will determine whether Bayern maintains its slim lead or falls behind in the Bundesliga standings.
