21 points. That is the current total for both Arsenal and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table after eight matchdays. The gap between the two leaders vanished on Saturday due to a split result in rain-soaked conditions.

Manchester City suffered their first league defeat of the campaign at Aston Villa. Nicolas Jackson scored twice for the visitors, ending City's unbeaten start to the season. The result erased the three-point advantage City held over Arsenal before the weekend.

Arsenal capitalized on the opportunity at home against Everton. Martin Odegaard delivered a corner kick that Jordan Pickford initially saved, but Ezri Konsa pounced on the rebound to score from close range in the seventh minute. It was Arsenal's first set-piece goal in 13 games. Ben White and Gabriel combined in the 68th minute for the second goal, with White crossing and Gabriel heading in on his 200th Premier League appearance.

At Villa Park, Unai Emery's team climbed to sixth place with 11 points. Jackson opened the scoring in the sixth minute after a mistake by Marc Guehi allowed John McGinn to set him up. Erling Haaland briefly leveled for City in the second half with a header from a free kick. Jackson restored Villa's lead exactly on the 60-minute mark, finishing from the right to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma.

City faces an ongoing financial dispute while playing. An independent commission found the club committed 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules. The club is currently awaiting the outcome of its appeal and denies wrongdoing.

Elsewhere in the division, Tottenham Hotspur defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Cole Palmer was sent off in the 80th minute. Mathys Tel scored the final goal in the 87th minute. Fulham defeated Coventry City 1-0, with Oscar Bobb scoring in the 80th minute to secure the win.
