Latvia's National Armed Forces announced on Saturday that they have recovered the wreckage of an unmanned aerial vehicle in the Alūksne district. The military stated that the drone most likely crossed into Latvian airspace on October 18.
The incident initially drew public attention after residents reported a loud noise resembling an explosion. Following that report, the armed forces and the State Police launched a search for a potential crash site. Investigators suspended the operation after two days, citing insufficient data to determine the nature of the event. The search resumed later, leading to the discovery of the debris on October 24.
Military officials confirmed that no civilians were injured during the incident. They reported that civilian infrastructure sustained no damage and identified no further threats to the area. An investigation into the specific circumstances of the crash is currently underway, alongside an internal review of the factors surrounding the event.
The discovery follows a similar breach in neighboring Lithuania on October 18. Lithuanian authorities located the wreckage of a suspected drone in the village of Juodžionys within the Pasvalys district. Officials in Vilnius stated that the aircraft entered their airspace from Poland. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius indicated that the drone contained explosives.
Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesman for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, suggested that Russian electronic warfare measures likely caused the Lithuanian incident. He noted that Ukraine expressed regret over the event. The Latvian military continues its analysis of the recovered debris.
