Adam Schwegman has been booked on 16 charges following an alleged crime spree in Topeka, Kansas.
Topeka police report that Schwegman stabbed two individuals along S.W. Fillmore. His booking records also include an allegation of rape at that same address. Officials said an hour earlier had not been the start of the incident but rather part of a sequence of events.
Schwegman then moved up S.W. Fillmore and broke into two houses. Four children were inside one of the homes, including an infant who was four months old. Authorities stated that none of the children were hurt during the break-ins.
The sequence of alleged crimes continued on a nearby street where a third victim was stabbed. Finally, Schwegman attacked a 70-year-old woman at Ward Meade Park. She was injured in that attack.
Ron Hubbard said he was with a friend on Wednesday, Oct. 28, when he noticed Schwegman running away from the park. Hubbard described the suspect as a stranger who looked unusual. Another bystander, who had seen Schwegman at the park, joined Hubbard to confront the man. Hubbard said he tripped Schwegman, causing the suspect to fall into the grass. The knife landed in the grass, and Hubbard kicked it onto the sidewalk while his friend held Schwegman down.
Schwegman escaped from the bystanders but was caught by police shortly after. He made his first court appearance on Thursday, Oct. 29. A judge set his total bond at $3 million. The charges include aggravated battery and rape. Hubbard said he wanted to stop the harm before it spread further. He noted that he hoped they could have intervened before the initial injuries occurred.
The next court date has not been specified in the initial booking information provided by the department.
