Kimi Antonelli finished third in the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday, but the result was sufficient to lock in the Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship for the Mercedes driver. He becomes the youngest champion in the history of the sport at age 20. The title was clinched with four races still on the calendar.
Antonelli finished behind Max Verstappen of Red Bull and Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari. Verstappen claimed his sixth victory at the Mexico City circuit. Antonelli placed his hands on the steering wheel after crossing the line and his voice cracked as he confirmed the achievement. "We did it, we did it," he said on the team radio.
The Italian driver holds an unassailable lead in the standings over his teammate George Russell and Hamilton. Antonelli is the first Italian to win the title since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Sebastian Vettel previously held the record for the youngest champion, achieving the feat at age 23 in 2010.
Stefano Domenicali, the chief executive of Formula 1, noted the financial and cultural weight of the achievement for Italy. "For 73 years, our country has waited for this moment," Domenicali said. He added that the driver's name joins the legends of the sport.
The race was interrupted on lap 46 when Valtteri Bottas crashed into the wall at the first corner due to suspension issues. Cadillac reported that the driver underwent further medical assessments as a precaution. Bottas exited his car unaided and waved to fans before leaving the track.
Tension dominated the Ferrari garage. Hamilton lost pole position to Charles Leclerc on the fourth lap after briefly leaving the track. The stewards awarded Leclerc a five-second penalty. Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, expressed frustration with the decision.
"The stewards are basically handing Charles this win," Hamilton said. He argued that Leclerc benefited from clean air and did not have to manage the car like other drivers. Shortly before the red flag, Hamilton reported major problems via radio and appeared visibly frustrated upon returning to the pit lane.
Aston Martin faced its own mechanical struggles. Fernando Alonso retired from the race due to an engine issue, following a difficult qualifying session. His teammate Lance Stroll also exited on the seventh lap. Alonso described the reliability issues as occurring at the worst possible time. The championship series moves to Brazil and Las Vegas next, with the final two races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi facing uncertainty due to regional instability.
