Restaurant owners in Las Vegas are absorbing steep increases in the cost of imported ingredients rather than raising menu prices. This financial pressure has become a topic of conversation among voters ahead of the midterm elections scheduled for Tuesday.

Borman Yang, who owns Taiwan Deli, said her business relies on fresh produce shipped from Asia to serve authentic Chinese breakfast dishes. Yang noted that the cost of specific items has nearly doubled. She cited an imported radish that now costs twice what it did previously. For another common item, a dollar that once purchased five bags now buys only two.

Yang stated she is not swapping ingredients or reducing portion sizes to manage expenses. She extended the restaurant's operating hours to increase revenue. The establishment is now open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. When asked about the importance of keeping ingredients authentic even if substitutes are cheaper, Yang replied, 'Doesn't matter.'

Gayla Young, owner of Pipeline Malasadas, reported similar cost pressures. Her Hawaiian-inspired donut shops in Las Vegas and Hawaii source flavors like salted plum from Asia. Young said the price of these specific ingredients has risen by anywhere from 15 to 25 percent.

Young said the price of individual donuts has not changed yet. To offset the higher costs, she plans to introduce more bundle deals. She explained that while profit margins will shift, total revenue is expected to remain steady.

Owners noted that domestic ingredient costs, such as meat, have also increased. Both Yang and Young described the current situation as a struggle for all small food businesses. They expressed hope that prices for imported goods will decline soon, allowing them to revert to previous operating models.
