The NFL trade deadline arrives on Tuesday, and the league is buzzing with potential moves. Two teams, the Baltimore Ravens and the Los Angeles Chargers, are facing urgent questions about their starting quarterbacks. Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts are holding firm on their demands for running back Jonathan Taylor.
Baltimore is preparing to start undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano against Jacksonville on Thursday. The Ravens dropped to a 4-4 record after losing Lamar Jackson to a thumb injury and Tyler Huntley to a toe issue. Dan Graziano expects the team to explore other options if Jackson and Huntley remain out. He noted that Jacoby Brissett is a likely candidate if the Arizona Cardinals decide to part with him. Jeremy Fowler added that Tyson Bagent and Daniel Jones are also on the radar for low-cost signings.
The long-term future of Lamar Jackson remains a central topic. Fowler pointed out that Jackson faces an $84 million cap hit in 2027, which complicates extension negotiations. If no deal is reached by March 2028, Jackson becomes an unrestricted free agent. His contract includes no-franchise tag and no-trade clauses, giving him control over his destination. Fowler observed that while Jackson is under contract, the Ravens must now seriously consider life without him if the current season does not improve.
In Los Angeles, the Chargers sit at 0-7, and questions are mounting about quarterback Justin Herbert. An AFC executive told Fowler that Herbert does not seem comfortable in the offense and is throwing interceptions because he is not seeing defenders. A defensive coach noted that the entire team has struggled around him, citing a poor offensive line and weak running game. Fowler suggested that recent mechanical changes to Herbert's throw might be affecting his confidence, or he may still be processing a tough playoff loss to New England.
The biggest trade discussion involves Jonathan Taylor. The Colts are asking for a second-round pick plus another selection, though some executives believe Indianapolis is holding out for a first-rounder. Taylor is 27 years old and not in the final year of his contract, which gives the Colts leverage. The New York Giants are among the teams interested, with Fowler noting they have also inquired about defensive linemen. Other Colts players drawing interest include wide receiver Josh Downs and tight end Mo Alie-Cox.
The New York Jets do not appear to be in selling mode despite their 2-6 record. Fowler stated that the team values its current offensive roster and sees little need to move star running back Breece Hall. He noted that the Jets are closer to competing than they were last year, which reduces the pressure to trade assets. Teams around the league expect the Jets to keep their core players intact for the remainder of the season.
