Rob Wright III scored 35 points for BYU in the program's regular season opener against Ohio State on Monday. The Cougars defeated the Buckeyes in a game where the freshman guard controlled the tempo and scoring.
Wright finished the contest shooting 10 of 16 from the field. He made four of five three-point attempts and 11 of 12 free throws. He also recorded five assists and committed a single turnover.
An official program review adjusted Wright's initial score from 33 to 35 points. According to Jarom Jordan of BYUtv, the review added two points to his tally. Stats Perform noted that Wright is one of only five Division I players in the past three decades to record 35 points, five assists, and one turnover in a season opener. He is the only player to achieve that combination against a high-major opponent.
BYU coach Kevin Young cited Wright's poise as the defining factor in the performance. Young stated that Wright's 11 free throws made, five assists, and single turnover allowed him to control the game. The coach emphasized the player's ability to manage the ball under pressure.
Wright's scoring surge helped close an early deficit. BYU trailed by 11 points midway through the first half. Wright then scored 10 points in the following eight minutes, reducing the gap to three points at halftime. He added 19 points in the second half, including all four of his three-pointers.
The team's offensive flow relied heavily on Wright's distribution. BYU's first two baskets resulted from his assists. The game-tying three-pointer by Collin Chandler in the early second half also came off a Wright pass. Tyler Betsey, a forward for BYU, credited Wright as the best player he has played with in college. Betsey's first career points as a Cougar came from a Wright assist.
Brooks Bahr, a freshman guard, also contributed in his collegiate debut. Bahr played 14 minutes with a plus-minus of plus 11. He recorded two points, one rebound, and two assists. Young described Bahr's energy and defensive effort as standout qualities. Young called Bahr a dog, predicting Cougar Nation would embrace his style of play.
Analytics shared by X user Yze Guy indicated that BYU was plus 54.5 in net efficiency while Bahr was on the court. The team shot 62 percent from the field and scored 1.68 points per possession during his time on the floor. Wright said Bahr has pushed him daily since the summer, bringing toughness and early gym sessions to the team dynamic.
