Tesla disclosed in its Q3 2026 shareholder letter that it has 1.74 million active Full Self-Driving subscriptions, a figure representing 67% growth from the prior year. The report, released today, includes a footnote clarifying the methodology behind the number. According to the company, this metric adheres to the definitions set by the 2025 CEO Performance Award. Consequently, the total includes both upfront payments and monthly subscriptions for the software feature. This accounting method means customers who purchased the technology outright years ago remain in the active count as long as their vehicles are active. The only category excluded from this tally is free trials.

This reporting approach aligns with specific operational milestones required for Elon Musk's 2025 compensation package. One of the targets in that package requires reaching 10 million active FSD subscriptions. Tesla ceased selling FSD as a one-time purchase on February 14, 2026, limiting new customers to a monthly subscription at $99 in the US. However, those who paid upfront before that date, with prices previously reaching $15,000, continue to be counted as subscribers. Tesla has not specified how many of the 1.74 million current users are paying the monthly rate. The company has also not provided figures regarding the number of unsupervised self-driving capabilities currently available to users.

Alongside the subscription count, Tesla reported that more than 75% of new deliveries in North America included FSD subscriptions in Q3. The company describes this as a nearly twenty percentage point sequential increase and suggests that the feature is driving demand in markets where it is offered. Tesla has not defined how this specific attach rate is calculated. It remains unclear if subscriptions initiated with introductory offers are counted or if the statistic includes users who are no longer paying after a few months. The cumulative deliveries figure of 10.2 million also incorporates unsupervised Robotaxis placed into commercial operation to align with a separate vehicle delivery milestone.

Reaching the goal of 10 million active FSD subscriptions would require substantial growth. The company added 260,000 net subscriptions in Q3, which was its strongest quarter to date. At that specific rate, the target would take roughly eight years to achieve. Using the pace from the last 12 months, which averages about 700,000 per year, the timeline extends to roughly 12 years. The compensation award remains active through 2035. As of June 30, Tesla had considered only one operational milestone probable: reaching 20 million deliveries. The other targets include 10 million active FSD subscriptions, 1 million Optimus robots, 1 million robotaxis in commercial operation, and adjusted EBITDA targets.

The metric relies on definitions established by the board for compensation purposes rather than standard financial reporting for investors. The company has not released retention data for the 75% attach rate claim. Specifically, it is not stated how many North American buyers who started subscriptions in Q2 remain active customers in Q3.
