Valerie Amezcua is leading the Santa Ana mayoral race as of Wednesday.

The incumbent faces two challengers: public agency attorney Dan Shimell and community organizer Dwayne Shipp. Shipp has conceded the race. The campaign centered on the city's handling of federal immigration enforcement. Critics from immigrant rights groups argued the administration was not vocal enough. Amezcua defended her approach on Election Day. She said, "I could have been that louder voice." She added that she brought funding items to the city council agenda for local families. Shimell argued for stronger leadership before the vote. He stated, "We need to be using our platform as elected leaders to stand up to ICE to let them know that what we've seen going on in our community is not acceptable."

Amezcua first took office as mayor. Her tenure has been defined by tensions over immigration policy. Shipp and Shimell challenged her for the seat. The debate focused on public safety and affordable housing. Both challengers ran on platforms that emphasized vocal opposition to immigration enforcement.

Two other contests in the city council races show a shift toward progressive leadership. In Ward 4, Sandra De Anda leads the race against incumbent Phil Bacerra. De Anda is affiliated with Orange County Rapid Response. Bacerra campaigned on public safety. In Ward 6, Isuri Ramos leads the race for an open seat. Ramos represents the organization Chispa. Her opponent, Giovanni Sanchez, serves on the Santa Ana Rental Housing Board. Both De Anda and Ramos lead organizations that advocate for immigrant rights.

Voters expressed mixed feelings about the potential changes. Leo Rodriguez, a Santa Ana voter, noted that the council composition is changing. He said, "I hope that that could take us in a different direction." Amy Kuach, a second-generation immigrant, emphasized the need for representation. She said, "knowing that our city ward and the city council actually understand the struggle." The council will soon make decisions on public safety and affordable housing. Ballots are still being counted as of Wednesday. Voters in Orange County can view the latest results for all races.
