JetBlue will charge $50 each way for a first checked bag for most domestic economy passengers, marking a sharp jump from the $39 rate in effect just days earlier. The new pricing structure applies to tickets purchased on or after Nov. 3. For peak travel periods, including Thanksgiving and the winter holidays, the cost rises to $55 if paid at least 24 hours before departure. Passengers who wait until the final 24 hours will face charges of $60 during off-peak times and $70 during peak seasons.

The airline’s fee increases follow a volatile start to the year. In late February, U.S. and Israeli strikes initiated a conflict with Iran, sending jet fuel prices into a volatile swing. JetBlue first raised its baggage fees in March in response to these early cost pressures. That move helped trigger a wave of similar increases across major U.S. carriers, including Delta, United, American, and Southwest. At the start of the year, the first checked bag on most domestic flights cost $35 during off-peak periods, a rate that has now more than doubled.

The financial strain on the airline is evident in its fuel data. Executives reported on the third-quarter earnings call last week that JetBlue’s average fuel price hit $3.91 per gallon in the summer. That figure was up 57% from the same period a year earlier. The company expects that number to climb to $4.64 per gallon in the final three months of the year, an 85% year-over-year increase. The war with Iran remains unresolved, keeping traffic largely restricted through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil supplies.

JetBlue stated that the fee adjustments are designed to offset rising fuel and operating costs. The airline aims to keep base fares competitive while offering customers the option to pay for checked luggage only when necessary. The second checked bag fee also increased, starting at $70 each way during off-peak periods and $75 during peak travel. Those checking bags at the airport counter can pay up to $85 for a second bag.

Demand for flights has remained resilient despite the higher fares, according to JetBlue executives. The airline’s flagship terminal is located at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. While the new rates apply to most travelers, the airline noted that eligible co-branded credit card holders and members of its loyalty program can still check bags for free.
