Sandia Area Federal Credit Union broke ground this week on two new branches in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. The construction marks the next phase of expansion for the institution, which serves nine counties across New Mexico.
The two sites are scheduled to open in late 2027. The Albuquerque location will be situated at 1105 Snow Vista SW, while the Rio Rancho branch will occupy 4551 Safelite NE near U.S. 550. Upon completion, these additions will bring Sandia Area's total branch count to nine.
CEO and President Kevin Todd noted that the credit union holds more than $1.4 billion in assets, ranking it as the fourth-largest in the state. Todd reported that the customer base has grown by approximately 7% annually in recent years. While much of that increase has occurred through online channels, Todd stated the organization sought to strengthen its physical presence to foster face-to-face interactions with customers.
The selection of these specific addresses was driven by local demographic trends. "Both are areas of growing populations, and both locations are heavy commuter corridors," Todd said. The new buildings will operate as full-service branches equipped with drive-thrus. Each facility will contain four to five private offices. The Rio Rancho site will additionally feature a 12-person conference room available for reservation by local groups.
Sandia Area's last new branch opening occurred in February 2022 when the Santa Fe location debuted. Since then, the credit union has focused on renovating existing spaces to modernize the customer experience. Todd described the new design philosophy as emphasizing an open atmosphere rather than traditional teller lines and bulletproof glass.
Three existing sites have already undergone these renovations. The Coors Branch, for example, reopened this weekend with the updated layout. Architecture firm Momentum, a specialist in credit union design, created the plans for the new Albuquerque and Rio Rancho buildings to match this modern aesthetic.
Beyond the current projects, Todd indicated that the credit union is actively searching for a site in the Albuquerque area to construct its 10th branch.
