A 36-year-old woman from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire died in the Bahamas after swimming against a strong current to save her two sons.
Police said the incident occurred on Tuesday near the southern point of Bimini. The family was snorkeling when a current swept both boys away. The mother tried to reach them and was also carried off by the water. The boys were later rescued from the sea.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10:00 am. They were told a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. By the time the police arrived, she had already been transported to a local clinic for medical attention.
A local doctor pronounced her dead at the clinic despite efforts to save her life. Police stated that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after she was pulled from the water. The force opened an investigation into the sudden death of the mother.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed they are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.
