A 36-year-old British woman died in the Bahamas on Tuesday after a strong current swept her away while she attempted to retrieve her two sons during a snorkeling trip. Royal Bahamas Police Force officers opened an investigation into the incident, which occurred near the southern point of North Bimini.
Police reported that the woman was in the water with her husband and their two sons when the current carried both boys away. As she tried to reach them, the force said in a preliminary statement that the woman was also swept away. The boys were later pulled from the water.
Shortly after 10 am, officers at the Alice Town police station received a call regarding an unresponsive woman at the North Bimini ferry dock. By the time they arrived at the scene, the woman had already been transported to a local clinic for medical care.
A local doctor pronounced her dead at the clinic despite resuscitation efforts. Police stated that the woman had been rescued from the water and brought to the ferry dock, where CPR was administered. The force said foul play is not suspected at this time.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is aware of the case. A spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.
Bimini is a small island group located between Andros and Miami, Florida. It is the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland and is known for hosting a world-leading shark research centre.
