Denver Broncos fans witnessed a shift in the AFC West standings on Sunday after their team defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 at home. The result moves Denver into first place in the division. The win came after a final-play sack by linebacker Malcolm Roach that stopped the Chiefs from scoring a game-tying or game-winning touchdown.
The Broncos trailed by 11 points in the third quarter but scored on their final two possessions of the game to take control. The defensive stop on the last play sealed the lead for Denver, which now holds a 6-2 record.
The game flow saw Kansas City build a comfortable advantage early on. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with Rashee Rice for an 11-yard touchdown in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Mahomes threw a 73-yard touchdown pass to rookie running back Emmett Johnson. That play gave the Chiefs a 14-6 lead. A 45-yard field goal by Harrison Butker before halftime extended the lead to 17-13.
The Broncos responded in the third quarter with a touchdown pass from Bo Nix to Jaylen Waddle on fourth-and-goal. Nix followed that with a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Nate Adkins, which Denver converted to a two-point play. Those scores reduced the deficit to 24-21.
Kansas City attempted a 54-yard field goal in steady rain to regain the lead. Kicker Harrison Butker missed wide right. That miss gave the ball back to Denver with 35 seconds remaining. Quarterback Bo Nix threw a 51-yard pass to rookie running back Jonah Coleman. Coleman then rushed five yards for a touchdown to put Denver ahead 28-24.
The Chiefs drove back down the field with 1 minute and 56 seconds left. Kenneth Walker III carried the ball for 69 yards on 21 carries, helping the team reach the Denver 1-yard line. Walker ran for three yards on first down. The Chiefs could not convert on second or third down. On fourth down, Roach dropped Mahomes for a loss, ending the game.
Bo Nix finished the game 20 for 32 for 222 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Mahomes completed 30 of 41 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns. He did not throw an interception. The Chiefs dropped their second consecutive game. Mahomes had not been held scoreless by pass play in two straight games until this week.
Injuries affected both rosters during the contest. For the Chiefs, defensive lineman Peter Woods left in the first quarter with a neck injury. Cornerbacks L'Jarius Sneed and Mansoor Delane sat out with knee and shoulder issues, respectively. For the Broncos, cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine exited in the second quarter with an ankle problem. Safety Brandon Jones was ruled out at halftime with a hamstring injury. Running back RJ Harvey missed the game after being placed on short-term injured reserve.
The AFC West race is now tight. The Broncos visit the Carolina Panthers next Sunday. The Chiefs host the New York Jets in the same timeframe.
