Federal agents raided a mansion on North Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills on Tuesday morning. The search was conducted under a warrant related to an investigation into former U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell.
Swalwell, a Democrat from Dublin, California, resigned from Congress in April. He had been a front-runner in the state gubernatorial race before dropping out following allegations of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct with young women. The former lawmaker has denied all claims of wrongdoing.
Lourdes Arocho, an FBI spokesperson, confirmed the action in a statement. She noted that court documents are sealed and that no arrests were planned during the operation.
This is not the first time authorities have searched Swalwell’s property. Agents raided his Washington residence over the weekend in August. During that search, they seized his electronic devices and briefly held him at San Francisco International Airport.
A source familiar with the inquiry stated that investigators are using federal civil rights law to examine Swalwell’s actions while he held office. The specific charge involves willfully depriving a person of constitutional rights while acting under official government authority.
Court records show that prosecutors sought to recover a white iPhone and a MacBook Pro from Swalwell. These devices are central to the inquiry into the sexual assault allegations.
Separate investigations are currently underway in New York and Los Angeles County. The federal probe adds a new layer to the case that has shaken Capitol Hill and forced both parties to address internal cultures of silence.
