Dallas police reported four deaths and 15 injuries resulting from three distinct shootings in the Deep Ellum neighborhood on Halloween night.
The first incident occurred around midnight in the parking lot of a convenience store on the 2600 block of Elm Street. Officers stated that five people were shot during an apparent altercation. Minutes later, gunfire broke out along Commerce Street near South Crowdus Street, killing three individuals. A third shooting took place around 1:35 a.m. on the 200 block of South Crowdus Street, resulting in one additional death.
Among the victims was 28-year-old Unique Benjamin, a certified nursing assistant from Chicago. Her best friend, Oshshanae Rose, described Benjamin as a hard worker with a positive spirit who enjoyed dressing up. Rose was driving to find parking to meet Benjamin when the gunfire started. She noted that Benjamin was an innocent bystander at the scene.
"I just can't believe she's gone," Rose said. "I began wondering and started calling, 'Has anyone talked to Unique?' I couldn't find her."
Anthony Martin, 25, who also went by Quincy McCleary, was another victim. His sister, Ashley Martin, said she learned her brother's body was pulled from a car lifeless. Martin described her brother as a rapper and video game player who was generous with his belongings. She expressed frustration over the lack of answers and the ongoing loss of life in the community.
"We're hurting out here, your children are hurting, that's why they're killing each other," Martin said. "I'm so mad, I'm mad, but I know I have to be strong."
The other identified victims were 20-year-old Isaiah Boling and 21-year-old Kanisea Scott. Boling was a father of two, sharing a son who is two years old and a daughter who is one year old with his partner, Thalia Tracey. Police have not yet released further details on the cause of death for Scott.
