A 39-year-old gunman killed one person and injured five others in Trappes and La Verriere on Friday. French authorities have classified the incident as both racially motivated and a terrorist act. The victim who died, Pengo Bassio Wangi, was a young Black man. Among the five injured is a 12-year-old girl who suffered serious wounds.

The shooting began at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time. The suspect drove through the two working-class communities on the outskirts of Paris. He fired an automatic weapon at a petrol station, a medical centre, and a children's playground. Police arrested the suspect, identified as Kevin T., after the rampage lasted about 15 minutes.

Local MP Laurent Mazaury stated that the suspect told officers he intended to "kill foreigners." Mazaury added, "I think we are facing a racist person." French media reports indicate that one of the wounded women was wearing a headscarf, as was the injured girl, who is of North African descent. Prosecutors said three of the five injured people remain in critical condition.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the event as "clearly a terrorist crime." Prosecutors are investigating whether the suspect conspired with a terrorist group. A member of his immediate family circle has also been taken into custody. Investigators found an older-style semiautomatic weapon from the World War II era and tear gas grenades in the suspect's car.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu called the case "very serious" and confirmed that all security and judicial resources are mobilised. President Emmanuel Macron termed the incident a "racist terrorist attack" and a "turning point in the life of our Republic and our nation." Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh, who has Moroccan roots, said the gunman wanted to cause a "bloodbath." He described the attack as "objectively a racist attack, probably Islamophobic."

Authorities plan to deploy 70,000 police officers on Saturday to manage expected demonstrations. The attack occurred while cost-of-living and student protests grip the country. Some far-right voices have blamed Muslim youths for the unrest. National Rally leader Marine Le Pen condemned the shooting as "barbaric." Muslim groups accused the populist right of fostering hatred through Islamophobic rhetoric.

Monitors report that anti-Muslim hostility is growing in Europe and the United States. The European Parliament passed a resolution last week calling for an EU strategy against Islamist entryism. Amnesty International stated in June that Islamophobic violence in the United Kingdom had reached "emergency levels." The EU's Fundamental Rights Agency reported that one in two Muslims in Europe face racial discrimination.
