Google AI cites FEC instead of naming 2020 winner
The tool deflected direct questions about the 2020 and 2024 elections, while providing straightforward answers for contests dating back to 2000.

Google’s AI Mode avoided a direct answer when asked to identify the winner of the 2020 presidential election. Instead of naming Joe Biden, the system directed users to the Federal Election Commission for official results and statistics.
The response stated, "To review the official results and statistics of the 2020 United States presidential election, including the final electoral college breakdown, popular vote counts, and winner certification, please consult the official report compiled by the Federal Election Commission (FEC)."
Testing showed a similar pattern for the 2024 election, where the AI again pointed users to the FEC rather than naming the victor. In contrast, a query regarding the 2012 election yielded a link to The American Presidency Project’s 2012 Data Center.
The tool provided detailed and correct names for every other presidential election from 2000 onward. This inconsistency sparked discussion on social media before independent testing confirmed the varying responses.
Other reporters observed different behavior from the same system. One user received immediate answers for the 2016 and 2024 cycles, while other years resulted in external links. These results suggest the specific election years that trigger a direct answer may vary by individual user.
