Helen Haines is no longer in critical condition.
Alfred Hospital in Melbourne upgraded the 65 year old independent member of parliament to serious but stable on Saturday morning. This marked the first improvement since she was airlifted from Wangaratta on Monday after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office.
Both of Haines' legs were amputated due to the injuries sustained in the collision. Authorities maintain the car was driven into her deliberately. Her husband, Phil Haines, stated on Wednesday that while the incident caused severe physical harm, her heart and mind remained in good shape.
Brendan Nugent, 43, appeared in court facing charges of dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Police allege he drove a Toyota LandCruiser into the MP. His defense attorney cited mental health concerns without providing specific details. Investigators are also examining potential links to drug use or medication, and police have not yet established a specific motive.
Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police continue their joint investigation. Nugent's family described themselves as long time friends of the Haines family. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently commented on the political climate, noting a rise in temperature and a lack of discourse. Haines has served in parliament since 2019 following a career as a nurse and midwife, where she advocated for stronger climate action.
