Mbappe Claims 22-Goal World Cup Record as Ballon d'Or Bid
The Real Madrid forward seeks the top individual prize despite going a full season without lifting a trophy.

Kylian Mbappe scored 22 goals in 22 matches at the 2026 World Cup in North America. This total makes him the all-time leading scorer in tournament history. He surpassed Lionel Messi, who sits second with 21 goals, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16.
The forward uses this record to argue for the Ballon d'Or. The award will be presented at a ceremony in London on Monday. It carries no cash prize, but it increases a player's market value and professional status.
Mbappe is not the favorite among bookmakers. He also did not lead the scoring in every competition last season. However, he won the Golden Boot at the World Cup for the second consecutive tournament. He stated last month that becoming the all-time top scorer in the sport's most important event stands out.
When asked who he was voting for in the race, Mbappe answered, "Myself."
His club performance supported the case. Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals. He also led the Champions League scoring charts with 15 goals. He noted that he was the top scorer in all the major competitions he played in during the 2025-26 season.
The main weakness in his bid is the lack of trophies. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. The club went two straight seasons without a major title under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. France placed fourth at the World Cup after losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place match.
Rival candidates achieved more silverware. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich won three trophies, including the Bundesliga title. Mbappe told RFI radio that the award goes to a player, not a team. He argued that individual performance and eye-catching moments define the prize.
Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid's manager, backed the forward. Mourinho said the club knows who made history this summer and that the player is not from Paris Saint-Germain or the Spanish national team.
Historical data poses a challenge for Mbappe. Every Ballon d'Or winner over the past decade lifted at least one trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 prize after helping PSG win the Champions League. Rodri won Euro 2024 and the Premier League before claiming the award two years ago.
One precedent exists for a winner without a major trophy. Cristiano Ronaldo won the award in 2013 for Real Madrid. He scored 66 goals for club and country that season. Portugal missed the 2012 World Cup finals, and Real Madrid finished as league runners-up. Mbappe has been nominated nine times and finished third in 2023.
