President Donald Trump expressed surprise on Tuesday over the resounding losses suffered by Republican candidates in the midterm elections. Speaking on Fox News, he admitted the results caught him off guard despite large crowds at recent rallies. "I thought we would do better," Trump said. "We had tremendous rallies, thousands of people outside let alone inside that couldn't get in."

The president pointed to external factors and internal party dynamics as reasons for the defeat. He cited high gas prices resulting from the war in Iran and criticized the quality of Republican nominees. "I wasn't on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!" he wrote on his social media platform shortly after Democrats were projected to take control of the House.

Trump previously urged supporters to vote as if he were on the ballot during his campaign stops. However, he acknowledged that many voters disagreed with his choices. "But they didn't agree, and they didn't like the candidates in most cases, just one of those things," he told Politico. He noted that while some Republicans won, it was not enough to keep the majority.

The president played a direct role in several key races that ended in losses for his endorsed candidates. In the Texas Senate race, Trump backed Ken Paxton over incumbent John Cornyn in the primary. Paxton was projected to lose on Tuesday. In South Carolina, Trump supported Darline Graham for a full term in the seat of her late brother, Lindsey Graham. Graham was also projected to lose her bid.

Trump directed specific criticism at Greg Abbott, the incumbent Republican governor of Texas who lost his bid for a fourth term. Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa was projected to defeat Abbott. "If Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, hadn't become a RINO in the last six months of his Political Life, he wouldn't have lost," Trump posted. He added that Abbott returned to his "original formula," which was "not pretty."

Despite the losses, Trump said he is willing to work with the new Democratic leadership. In an interview with Politico, he stated he would do whatever is appropriate for the country, including potentially striking an immigration deal. "I'd consider doing whatever I think is appropriate and good for the country," he said. He described the recent period as one where he learned a great deal.

The president emphasized his constitutional authority to block legislation. He posted a picture of his signature red hat with the word "VETO" displayed across it. "Democrats are in control, but they're really not in control because they can send over, you know, 50 different great bills that they're all excited about, and I send them back with a nice stamp veto," he told Fox News.
