Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann confirmed the state will rebuild the Kehlsteinhaus after a fire reduced the structure to rubble. The decision follows a blaze that consumed the building on Friday night, leaving the historic site largely destroyed.

A 33-year-old German citizen was arrested in connection with the incident. Prosecutors indicated the suspect showed signs of mental illness and has been moved to a psychiatric facility. While authorities are examining a political motive, no official cause for the fire has yet been determined.

Emergency services were alerted at 9:15 p.m. when a smoke detector triggered an alarm. By 9:50 p.m., when crews arrived, the building was completely engulfed in flames. Approximately 200 firefighters from six municipalities, along with the Bavarian Red Cross and mountain rescue teams, responded to the scene.

The remote location at 1,834 metres complicated the firefighting effort. Police spokesperson Lisa Maier noted that the site could only be reached with heavy breathing apparatus. Strong winds and rain, which turned into the season's first snow, forced crews to withdraw overnight. The fire appeared to be out later on Saturday morning, though smoke continued to rise.

The Kehlsteinhaus was built between 1937 and 1938 and inaugurated by Adolf Hitler in 1939. It stands as one of the few undamaged monuments from that era. Visitors access the site via a road cut into the mountain, a tunnel, and a 124-metre brass lift buried in the rock.

Since 1952, the building has operated as a restaurant and hosts an exhibition on its Nazi past by the Institute for Contemporary History. Herrmann stated the state would not leave a ruin in place. He emphasized the importance of continuing the work of remembrance after consulting with local officials, historians, and conservators.

German media reported investigators suspected arson, but police said nothing indicated other individuals were involved. The road leading to the retreat remained closed to traffic as assessments of the damage continued.
