Israeli leadership is preparing for a potential third major confrontation with Iran, a campaign that many domestic observers fear may mirror the cyclical nature of the Gaza conflicts rather than end them.

The core anxiety in Jerusalem is that Iran could become a permanent fixture in Israeli defense planning, similar to the series of engagements with Hamas that occurred in 2008, 2012, 2014, and 2021. Officials worry the new adversary may be too powerful to defeat completely, forcing Israel into a long-term strategy of containment and deterrence instead of total victory.

This scenario presents a different logistical burden than previous wars. A conflict with Iran would likely involve ballistic missiles raining down on cities across the country, not just the southern border. Such a widespread threat would disrupt air travel, foreign investment, and daily life, requiring the continuous production of expensive air-defense interceptors.

Despite these risks, government officials argue that two key factors make a third round more promising than the nearly two-decade struggle with Hamas. First, they point to widespread domestic dissatisfaction in Iran, noting that tens of millions of citizens actively oppose the regime. Second, Israel now has the United States fighting alongside it, a strategic advantage that was absent in previous regional wars.

The scale of internal pressure in Iran differs from the dynamics in Gaza. In early January, approximately one million Iranians protested against their government. Additionally, the US has maintained a sustained military presence and economic pressure throughout most of 2026, a level of force Israel could not have generated alone against Hamas.

Skeptics, however, note that a major land operation to topple the Iranian regime is either politically difficult or militarily impractical. This contrasts with the Gaza war, where Hamas faced little internal opposition and was fighting a small economy of 10 million people. The previous conflict was also characterized by short bursts of intense fighting followed by long periods of lower-level patrolling, rather than a continuous two-year campaign.

Optimists within the government believe that further attacks and pressure could force Tehran to make nuclear concessions or potentially collapse. They are not certain of this outcome, particularly given that Israel dropped more than 30,000 bombs on Iran over 40 days in early 2026 without securing nuclear deals or removing the leadership.

The decision to strike now hinges on the belief that the current window of opportunity is better than waiting for the nuclear or missile programs to become imminent threats. Officials acknowledge that the cost to the Israeli home front will be a complex calculation, but they view the current alignment of US support and Iranian unrest as a distinct shift from past conflicts.
