Russian security services detained a teenager on Sunday after the US embassy in Moscow warned of a potential attack at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve. The park, a popular destination in southern Moscow, closed its gates on Saturday following the alert. The US State Department described the threat as credible and advised visitors to stay away from the site while officials coordinated their response.
The Federal Security Service, or FSB, identified the suspect as a Russian citizen who posted images on TikTok. In the photos, the teen wore a balaclava and tactical gear while holding what appeared to be an automatic weapon. One image was taken at the Tsaritsyno complex and included the caption, “I found a place.” Investigators later searched the suspect’s home and recovered the specific clothing and accessories shown in the online posts.
Digital evidence from the teenager’s phone also revealed searches for terms related to mass killings and terrorist attacks. The device showed a subscription to a neo-Nazi Telegram channel. The FSB stated that the US provided the initial intelligence that led to the detention. “We are grateful to the American side for providing the information,” the agency said in a statement released on Sunday.
This incident follows a similar warning issued in March 2024, weeks before an affiliate of the ISIL group attacked a Moscow concert hall and killed more than 140 people. Despite ongoing tensions between Washington and Moscow over the war in Ukraine, the two governments continued to share security information in this case. The detention occurred after the US embassy issued its security alert on Saturday.
Russian authorities are now determining the next legal steps for the suspect. The Investigative Committee is reviewing the case to decide on further action. The Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve remains a focal point for the investigation, with officials examining the timeline between the online posts and the physical search of the teen’s residence.
