U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Cubans seeking political change to establish direct, quiet ties with the Central Intelligence Agency. In a post on X on Friday, he stated that the current moment offers a chance to address corruption and broken promises. He specifically urged readers to seize the opportunity through a discrete partnership with the agency.

The CIA quickly reposted Rubio's message on social media, accompanied by a Spanish-language version of the appeal. The agency included a video that outlined specific steps for individuals to contact intelligence officials. This public outreach marks a shift in how the Trump administration is engaging with Cuban reformers.

The diplomatic push arrives as economic pressure on the island intensifies. Cuba faces a strict U.S. embargo and sanctions designed to pressure its communist government. Basic goods have become expensive, and access to medical care has declined. Reports indicate that citizens have waited hours in lines for bread and for doctor appointments.

Washington added new economic leverage last week by sanctioning Cuba's state-run bank. The U.S. government cited the institution's ties to Iran as the reason for the measure. These financial restrictions aim to tighten the grip on the Cuban economy further.

President Trump reinforced the administration's stance during a campaign rally in South Florida on Friday. He linked the situation in Cuba to U.S. military operations in the Middle East, specifically referencing Navy warships deployed near the Strait of Hormuz. He told the crowd that the U.S. would take care of Cuba on the return trip from Iran.

Trump detailed a specific plan for the naval encounter. He said one of the ships would stop approximately 50 yards off the Cuban coast. He described a scenario where the Cubans would raise their hands in surrender, allowing Rubio to finalize the deal. This visualization places a U.S. warship in immediate proximity to the island's territory.

Cuba's government responded to the rhetoric with formal rejection. Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla posted on X on Friday that the island rejects threats arising from U.S. ambitions. He noted that while the coastline features beaches, it is also rugged and inhospitable to those arriving with hostile intentions.
