Lamine Yamal holds the edge in artificial intelligence projections for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, but betting markets overwhelmingly favor Harry Kane. The divergence creates uncertainty with less than 24 hours remaining until the award is presented at the London Palladium.
Avisia, a French data analysis firm, released a probability model identifying the Barcelona winger as the front runner. Yamal carries a 23 percent chance of winning the trophy for the 2025-26 season. Kane follows with a 21 percent probability, while Kylian Mbappe and Rodri are tied for third at 19 percent. Lionel Messi rounds out the top five with an 18 percent chance.
Bookmakers tell a different story. They assign Kane roughly a 70 percent probability of victory. This makes the England captain the market favorite despite the AI split. Avisia stated that its models correctly identified the top five candidates for the 2025 award, which went to Ousmane Dembele.
Players on the shortlist offer divided support. Jude Bellingham backed Kane, describing him as an honest and hard-working person. Anthony Gordon favored his teammate Yamal, calling the 19-year-old's performance at a young age ridiculous. Aurelien Tchouameni supported Mbappe, citing an incredible season for the Real Madrid forward.
Mbappe leads in individual scoring statistics. He finished as La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals and the Champions League's leading marksman with 15. He also won the World Cup Golden Boot and set the record for most World Cup goals with 12. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the most by any player since Lionel Messi netted 82 in 2011-12.
Trophies won during the season weigh heavily in the decision. Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Kane won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich but finished third with England. Mbappe did not win a major title with club or country. Only four of the previous 19 Ballon d'Or winners failed to lift a major trophy during their award year.
Yamal aims to become the youngest winner in history. He would surpass Brazilian Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won the award in 1997.
