Minnesota is the only NFL team with a perfect record after defeating Indianapolis 16 to 10 on Sunday. The Vikings secured their sixth straight win to stay at the top of the league standings. They achieved this victory despite a lackluster offensive performance that produced just 275 total yards. The defense limited the Colts to 218 yards, securing the win for the team.
The Seattle Seahawks dominated the Kansas City Chiefs in a 20 to 3 victory. The Chiefs, who were coming off a bye week, struggled against the Seahawks defensive front. Kenneth Walker III was held to 36 yards on 14 carries in his first game back against his former team. Walker had entered the week leading the NFL in rushing yards. Patrick Mahomes completed only 57.6 percent of his passes and failed to reach the red zone. The last time that happened in his career was in Week 7.
The San Francisco 49ers lost 29 to 20 to the Atlanta Falcons while missing their top five receivers. The 49ers started the season with a 6 to 0 record but fell short in this game. Brock Purdy threw two interceptions, including one near midfield with under three minutes left. The Falcons scored 13 points off those turnovers. The 49ers will have a week off before hosting Las Vegas on November 8. The Chiefs face Denver next Sunday in a matchup for first place in the AFC West.
The Minnesota Vikings face a tough schedule in the coming weeks. They will travel to Detroit to play the Lions, then host the Buffalo Bills. After that, they will play on the road against the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers. The NFC North contains four teams with winning records. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said the team is still finding its rhythm. He noted that the defense has been strong enough to win games even when the offense is not producing at its best.
The Detroit Lions escaped a late deficit in their game against the Packers. Coach Dan Campbell called for a fourth down play at his own 24 with the score tied and less than five minutes remaining. Jahmyr Gibbs lost two yards on the attempt. The Packers took over at the Lions 22-yard line but could not score. The Lions eventually kicked a winning field goal. Campbell said he believed the team would convert the down. He also knew the Lions would get the ball back if they failed. This call echoed a similar decision by Barry Switzer in 1995 where the Cowboys lost a tie game in the final two minutes.
The NFL played its first regular season game in France on Sunday. The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the New Orleans Saints 16 to 10. Aaron Rodgers led the Steelers offense in that matchup. The game marked the opening of the Sunday slate before the other regular season games took place across the United States.
